How Cisco and Internet2 connect researchers

Together, Cisco and Internet2 deploy advanced networking technology to connect researchers across the United States and around the globe. We do this by supporting five key things that can accelerate research: the Internet2 backbone, automation and orchestration, telemetry, Regional Education Networks (REN) activities, and community investments.

The Internet2 backbone

Products that support the Internet2 network

Automation and orchestration

Internet2 is standardized on Cisco Network Services Orchestration (NSO) for software and operation configuration changes.

We’re managing everything on the new network with NSO. That includes the network infrastructure itself and all of the customer-facing services on it, such as BGP peering and Layer 2 and Layer 3 circuits.

Telemetry

  • Assure digital experiences over any network with Cisco ThousandEyes.
  • Visualize, manage, and troubleshoot Internet2 network services with Internet2 Insight Console.
  • Gain better visibility, insight, and analytics with Accedian.

REN activities

RENs in Connecticut, Kansas, Texas, Maryland, and Arkansas

RENs active in Connecticut, Kansas, Texas, Maryland, and Arkansas. Plus, Q1FY24 win with the Pennsylvania REN (KINBER).

Community investments

  • Cisco Duo and offerings on Internet2 NET+
  • Direct peering with Cisco Webex Calling in-process (improve latency, user experience)
  • Cisco and GlobalNOC available for training/ testing on Cisco IOS XR devices
